Prosperity Party Wins Landslide Victory in 2021 Election

Ethiopia's ruling Prosperity Party (PP), led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, secured an overwhelming landslide victory in the country's 6th General Election held on June 21, 2021.

The Prosperity Party won 457 out of 547 seats in the House of Peoples' Representatives, giving it a commanding majority in parliament. The party also dominated results in Regional State Council elections held across the country.

The election was the first national vote since the dissolution of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) in 2019 and the formation of the Prosperity Party. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the result as a mandate from the Ethiopian people to continue his reform agenda.

A second round of voting was held on September 30, 2021 in constituencies where elections were postponed due to security and logistical challenges, bringing the total elected representatives to the full 547-seat parliament.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) certified the results following a review of complaints and appeals submitted by participating parties.
