Ethiopia's House of Peoples' Representatives officially confirmed Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on October 4, 2021, following the Prosperity Party's decisive victory in the 6th General Election held on June 21, 2021.

Abiy Ahmed, who first came to power in April 2018 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for his peace agreement with Eritrea, was sworn in for a new five-year term before the newly constituted parliament.

In his address to parliament, Abiy Ahmed outlined key priorities for his second term, including:

  • Restoring peace and security across all regions of Ethiopia
  • Advancing economic development and reducing poverty
  • Completing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)
  • Strengthening national unity and democratic institutions
  • Expanding access to education and healthcare

The confirmation came after the completion of both rounds of the 6th General Election — the primary round on June 21 and the supplementary round on September 30, 2021 — giving the Prosperity Party an absolute majority of 457 seats in the 547-seat House of Peoples' Representatives.

President Sahle-Work Zewde, Africa's only female head of state, administered the oath of office. The ceremony was attended by diplomats, regional presidents, and senior government officials.

The new parliament and government took office amid significant security challenges, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Tigray region, which remained one of the most pressing issues for the incoming administration.
